Increased Adrenal Secretion Decreases Catabolism and Promotes Exuberant CD4 Increment

Catabolic women treated with the cortisol blocker, metyrapone, gained weight and increased their CD4 count compared to women in a placebo group, whose disease progressed. Studies such as this one demonstrate the central role that adrenal dysfunction plays in immune deficiency and the benefits of addressing such adrenal insufficiency to reverse the deterioration of the patients' surrogate markers, to halt catabolism caused by cortisol and androgen deficiency, and to restore their well-being.
